Dorinda Huddleston Marum, daughter of Leo G. and Lorraine Huddleston, passed away on the evening of May 1, 2007 at her home in Sherman, Texas, surrounded by loving family and friends.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2007 in the Grand Avenue Presbyterian Church. Reverend Lander Bethel of the church will officiate. The family received friends on Thursday, May 3, 2007 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Dannel Funeral Home.
Dorinda is survived by her husband of 18 years, Steve Marum; her two sons, Tim Schenk and wife Sherri of Sanger, Texas and Tom Schenk of Austin, Texas; her daughter, Hope Benton and husband Dooley of Dallas, Texas; and three grandchildren Alex and Daphne Schenk and Mea Benton.
Born in Waxahachie, Texas on November 2, 1947, Dorinda grew up there and in Grand Prairie, Texas, where she graduated from High School in 1966. After graduation, she married Phil Schenk. They had two sons, Timothy in 1968 and Thomas in 1970.
She and her sons moved to Sherman, Texas in 1976 where she enrolled at Austin College, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978. While attending Austin College, Dorinda and her family became active members of Grand Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Dorinda married Jerry Russell in 1979 and their daughter, Hope Elizabeth was born four years later.
Dorinda began her career as a teacher in 1980 and taught at Piner Middle School for 17 years. She married Steve Marum in 1989 and returned to school to receive her Master's Degree from the University of North Texas shortly thereafter. Dorinda was a devoted wife and mother and active in the Sherman community. She was cast in several productions by the Sherman Community Players such as "Bedroom Farce" and "Quilters".
She was a very active member of Grand Avenue Presbyterian Church being ordained as an elder and spending many years on the church's governing session. After retiring from teaching in 1998, she was the church secretary for eight years.
Dorinda spent many hours on her favorite pastime -- crochet. Many will recall that she always had several projects going and one of them was always with her, to be worked on during spare moments. Baby blankets she crocheted are all over the country. She enjoyed entering her creations in both the State Fair of Texas and the Grayson County Fair and has had something on display at the State Fair for each of the past five years.
She loved to sing and sang with her church choir and the Bel Canto Singers. She loved spending weekends and any other time she could with her three grandchildren, playing outside and reading stories at bedtime.
Dorinda loved nature. She spent countless hours gardening; roses were her favorite. She loved animals, both watching the wild birds at her backyard pond and, when she was younger, keeping horses on which she and her sons would ride. For many years she was the de-facto "animal wrangler" for her church's annual Live Nativity scene.
Dorinda was a very loving person, committed to helping others. She always made time whenever anyone needed her.
Memorials may be made in Dorinda's name to Mary Crowley Medical Research Center, 3535 Worth Street, Collins Building, Suite 302, Dallas, Texas 75246 and or Grand Avenue Presbyterian Church, 901 N. Grand Avenue, Sherman, Texas 75090. You may sign the online guestbook at DannelFuneralHome.com
Dorinda was a loyal wife, wonderful mother, caring friend and the best Grandmother a kid could want. All who knew and loved her will miss her.
