Services for Pitser Hardeman Garrison, 90, Lufkin's Mayor Emeritus, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church in Lufkin. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Gipson-Metcalf Funeral Home. Born on March 7, 1912, Garrison was the grandson of Texas State Senator Caleb Garrison of Rusk County and the son of Homer Garrison, Sr. and Mattie Milam Garrison, who came to Lufkin in 1910. He attended Lon Morris College, Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College and the University of Texas, graduating from its Law School in 1935. After the World War II, he returned to law practice in Lufkin. In 1952, the law firm was renamed Garrison, Renfrow, Zeleskey, Cornelius and Rogers and became one of East Texas largest and most influential law firms. In 1968, Garrison left his law firm to become president of Lufkin National Bank, serving 20 years. He was elected mayor of Lufkin in 1970, and served in the role 18 years. He was honored widely for his work on behalf of Texas and East Texas. During his lifetime, Garrison was honored for his achievements in East Texas twice by the Texas Legislature, once in 1987 and again in 2001. When he stepped down at mayor in 1988, the City Commission named him Mayor Emeritus. In 1993, the Lufkin Civic Center was renamed the Pitser Garrison Civic Center. He was preceded in death in 1992 by his wife of 56 years, Berneice Jones Garrison. Also preceding him in death were his six brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Reba Brent Garrison of Lufkin and her three children, Lea Williams, Donna and Bruce Chicoine, Dan and Gayle Brent, and their children; sisters-in-law, Linnette Jones Scagliola, Mrs. Homer (Mary Nell) Garrison, Jr. and Mrs. James (Louise) Garrison; and numerous nieces and nephews.
