Dallas architect Jack Hemphill dies at 63
Jack Hemphill of Dallas, president of Jack Hemphill Inc., an architecture and interior design firm, died at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas Saturday after a brief illness. He was 63.
Memorial services for Mr. Hemphill will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Episcopal Church.
A native of Memphis, Tenn., Mr. Hemphill moved to Fort Worth as a child. He later graduated from North Side High School in Fort Worth and earned a bachelor of science degree in architectural engineering from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., in 1949.
That same year, Mr. Hemphill moved to Dallas and began working for a Dallas architect. In 1951, he was employed by architect Temple Phinney for one year.
From 1952 to 1964, Mr. Hemphill was employed in the office of interior designer Astin Perkins. In 1964, Mr. Hemphill established his own firm and continued a private practice until 1971. From 1971 to 1978, Mr. Hemphill was employed by Beran and Shelmire, an architectural firm. In 1979, Mr. Hemphill went into partnership with Andrew Caubarreaux and became president of Hemphill and Caubarreaux Inc.
In 1983, the firm became Jack Hemphill Inc., and Mr. Hemphill was its president until his death.
Mr. Hemphill was a member of numerous architectural societies and organizations. He was a charter member of St. James Episcopal Church and served nine years on the church's vestry. He also designed the church.
Mr. Hemphill is survived by his wife, Sharon Hemphill of Dallas; two sons, Jack Ronald Hemphill of Las Vegas and Joseph Cecil Hemphill of Houston; a daughter, Margaret Kay Montgomery of Pensacola, Fla.; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a son, James Ralston Hemphill, in May. Memorials may be made to St. James Episcopal Church.
