Notes |
- GILMER - Services for Juanita Beasley Nelms, 101, of Arlington, formerly of Gilmer, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 1, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Ken Calhoun and Larry W. Osborne officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, with the Reverend Jess Bemis officiating.
Born July 28, 1907, to Hill and Hortense Beasley, she entered into eternal rest on Thursday, August 28, 2008.
She and her late husband, William Marshall Nelms, came to Gilmer 80 years ago and later owned and operated Nelms Furniture and Gifts in downtown Gilmer, and it still operates as Nelms at the Hudgins House on the southwest corner of the courthouse square.
For many years, the Nelms family lived at the corner of Bledsoe and North Street in the attractive white farm residence where they reared their two sons, Bill and Phillip. It was there that Mrs. Nelms entertained the 20th Century Club and other groups to which she belonged.
She played a key role in the 20th century, seeing records that may never be equaled. For many years from the mid-1950s to the early 1980s, she was the director of the East Texas Yamboree Pageant and remained on the board of directors.
For 75 years, she was the pianist for the Gilmer Rotary Club and the recipient of two Paul Harris Fellowship awards, the organist and pianist for the First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and organist and pianist for Croley Funeral Home for 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Marshall Nelms; brothers, Harold Beasley and Hill Beasley; and sister, Ida Jean Harrison.
She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-law, Dr. Bill and Ailsa Nelms of the Cayman Islands, and Phillip "Pete" Nelms of Dallas; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 105 N. Montgomery, Gilmer, TX 75644; or to the charity of your choice.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday evening, August 31, 2008, at Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.
