TWO WATER VALLEY ENGINEERS LOSE LIVES IN TRAIN WRECK; BURIED HERE YESTERDAY
W. H. Hartwell and George T. Bumgardner Victims of Derailment of Locomotive and Nineteen Freight Cars, Tuesday Afternoon South of Toone, Tenn. -- Bodies Brought Home By Train Yesterday Morning.--Conductor and Brakeman in Rear Escape Injury.
Water Valley has been in mourning since Tuesday evening, when word came that Walter H. Hartwell and George T. Bumgardner had been killed near Toone, Tenn., that afternoon, 1:52 p.m., by the derailment of their engine and nineteen cars, Freight No. 75, of the I. C. Railroad, returning from Jackson to Water Valley, where both engineers lived. Mr. Bumgardner was acting as fireman for the trip.
The victims were scalded by escaping steam from the engine boiler, being pinned down so they could not crawl out. It was an hour before their bodies could be removed and taken to Bolivar, six miles south of Toone. The conductor and brakeman in the the rear of the train were not injured and there were no others aboard.
Railroad officials did not assign any cause for the accident, pending an official investigation, but it is supposed to have been due to a loose rail.
The bodies of the two engineers were brought here yesterday by the south bound passenger train, which was late and did not arrive until about eleven o'clock.
