Fishing with Granddaddy

A little girl's fond memory

My mother, Doris Jean Garrison, was very young when her granddaddy William Logan passed away, so she doesn't have many memories of him. But she told me that she remembers one time in 1934 when her family visited granddaddy William and grandmother Julia at their home in Mt Vernon, New York. Granddaddy was going fishing, and little Doris asked if she could go with him. With a straight face, Granddaddy told her "okay, you can ride with us to the lake, but when it's time to go home, you will have to walk." Being only about five years old, she dutifuly nodded okay, and so when the fishing was over she got out of the boat and proceeded walking. Doris doesn't rememember who picked her up or how she eventually got back to the house, but needless to say, grandmother Julia was furious with Granddaddy - "What were you thinking, letting a five-year-old walk home from the lake!!" Note to my mother: feel free to correct any errors or omissions in this story!
