HABENICHT, RUTH WATKINS Services for Ruth Habenicht, 86, longtime resident of Kilgore, will be two p.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at the St. Lukes United Methodist Church with the Reverends Robert Besser and Ralph Rudy officiating. Burial will follow in the Kilgore Cemetery. Mrs. Habenicht had resided in Dallas since February of 2002. She was born July 2, 1916 in, Pittsburg, Texas. She graduated from Pittsburg High School as the class Salutatorian. Mrs. Habenicht married J. Marvin Watkins in 1939 and they moved to Kilgore in 1944. Mrs. Habenicht served as President of Bell Supply Company from 1966 until the early 1970s when she sold the company. In 1969 she married Harold G. Habenicht after the death of Mr. Watkins. Immediately after settling in Kilgore, she became involved in church, civic, business, cultural and social organizations. From 1944 until her death, she was a member of the St. Lukes United Methodist Church, where she was on the Board of Trustees and a member of the Administrative Council. She also served St. Lukes on the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, Parsonage Building Committee, Laird Hall Remodeling Committee, Wesley Foundation Building Committee and the Parlor Committee for the Family Center. In United Methodist Women, she served as President and Circle Chairman. For over 57 years, she was an active member of the Susanna Wesley Sunday School Class, serving one term as President. In addition, she served as Vice President of Hilltoppers. Mrs. Habenicht served on the Boards of Directors of United Way, the Community Concerts and the Gregg County Lung Association and on the Membership Committee of the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce. She was active in the PTA. A founding member of the Evergreen Garden Club, she served as its Vice President and Program Chairman. She was a member of Au Courant Club. She was formerly President of the Womens Division of Meadowbrook Country Club, as well as a member of the Summit Club and Oak Forrest Country Club in Longview. In 1966, she was honored for her community involvement by being named First Lady of Kilgore by Beta Sigma Phi. She is survived by her daughter Sharon Watkins Hemphill of Dallas, Texas; stepdaughter Kathryn Ann Habenicht Fishley and her husband Don of Seagrave, Ontario, Canada; stepson Harold Grady Habenicht of Texarkana, Texas; sister-in-law May Habenicht Kelly and her husband Tom of Colorado Springs, Colorado; eight step grandchildren; one niece Marianne Farrier Owen of El Paso, Texas; numerous cousins and a large extended family. Mrs. Habenicht was preceded in death by her first husband of 27 years, J. Marvin Watkins in 1966; by her second husband of 32 years, Harold G. Habenicht, in 2001; by her parents Earle and Cliff Garrison and by her sister Hazel Farrier. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from six until eight at Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore.
