  • Notes
    • HANSBROUGH, Livingston Chancellor "Pete," died Monday, September 22, 2008 in Henrico County, Virginia.

He was 95. He was born in 1913 in Salem, Virginia, the son of the late Livingston Chancellor Hansbrough Sr. and the late Louise Logan Hansbrough Apperson.

He attended Roanoke College, where he was a Sigma Chi. As a young man, he worked for several New Deal programs, surveying for the Tennessee Valley Authority and working with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked for many years as a general manager and operations manager for Carolina Coach Company busline in Richmond, Norfolk and Raleigh, N.C.

He was a member of the Rotary Club. He was the widower of Alfreda Shields Hansbrough, who died in 1999.

Slightly built, with boyish looks and a headful of curls, Pete had a playful, teasing manner and loved a good argument. He delighted in his children and grandchildren, to whom he was known as Daddy Pete.

He was passionate about fishing, gardening, fixing things and watching Duke athletics. Pete was never so happy as when engaged in a curmudgeonly crusade. He fought what he considered burdensome new sidewalks and road extensions in Raleigh, N.C., church bells he thought were too loud in Henrico County, Va., and had close to a hundred squirrel pelts from a decades-long defense of his birdfeeder.

He had a sharp, wide-ranging memory and a lively interest in current events. He could speak vividly one moment about his Civil War-veteran grandfather and the Virginia of his youth, then shift to a discussion of an article on world affairs he had read in one of three newspapers to which he subscribed.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Phillip Logan, Woodson Hansbrough and Harvey Apperson Jr.; and two sisters, Louise Hansbrough Auburn and Marion Hansbrough Hait. He is survived by a brother, Charles Apperson of Bowling Green; two daughters, Cynthia Hansbrough Kight and Carrington Hansbrough OBrion, both of Richmond; two sons-in-law, John Randolph Kight Jr. and John H. OBrion Jr.; four grandsons, J. Randolph Kight III, Christopher OBrion, and Cameron O'Brion, all of Richmond, and David Kight of Virginia Beach; three granddaughters-in-law, Lisa Kight, Catherine OBrion and Emily O'Brion, all of Richmond; and five great-grandchildren, Alex, Gregory and Jacob Kight, and Carrington and Grace OBrion, all of Richmond.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 27, at Woody's Parham Chapel at 1771 Parham Rd., in Richmond. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.

Donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, 490 Westfield Rd., Charlottesville Va. 22901. Notes to the family may be left at www.mem.com.
