Classification: Biography
Surnames: Devereux, Garrison, Hardeman
The Hardeman House is one of Henderson's older homes and is located at 313 East Main Street, and is referred to as the Hardeman Homestead in most of the land records in the Rusk County Courthouse.
Abigail HARDEMAN , sometimes call Abbie, was the daughter of Antoinette DEVEREAUX and Caleb Jackson GARRISON. Antoinette was the daughter of Julien Sidney Devereus, owner of Monte Verdi Plantation in southern Rusk Co. Caleb J. Garrison married Antoninette DEVEREAUX on May 15, 1856. Antoninette died in Henderson on August 29 1872 at the age of thirty-two years, leaving her husband and seven small children surviving her. Abigail Garrrison HARDEMAN was one of these children.
The deeds to the Hardeman property in Rusk County records show that Richard B. TUTT built "The White Tavern" before April 21 1856 on six acres of land which was part of the tract associated with the Hardeman property.
Other owners of the Property are H.L. GRIGGIN, long-time Henderson merchant, Colarence B. CANTIN, Davis McMAHON and Mrs. Lois FINLEY. DAvis McMahon and his wife, Lorea, restored the Hardeman House after purchasing it in 1962. In 1975, Mrs. Finley bought the restored home and has kept it in excellent condition, making as few alterations as possible. She has maintained it as her home since 1975 (1985)

Subject: Re: RE: RE: RE: Garrison-Logan Family History comments - Jean Logan Watts and Joseph Dandridge Logan
I'm pretty sure that Marjorie and John Logan are buried in Sherwood Park Cemetery in Salem. Is that the correct name? Also Marjorie's brother Cushing Payne Wood is buried there and I think Marjorie Jean Logan Watts' husband Thomas is there. I can't find out anything about where Marjorie Jean Logan is--I check the Roanoke newspaper for an obit and can't find any anywhere. I didn't know she had died until I saw it in the Social Security Death Index.
Joseph Dandridge Logan was cremated, I think, and ashes buried in East Hill Cemetery. He married 17 June 1950 Florence Suzanne Kime, b. 29 Sept 1927, d. 9 Aug 2003, buried in East Hill Cemetery.
Hope this helps. Mary Frances | Family: F3612

WILLIAM A. AYRES
WILLIAM A. AYRES. Montague county has looked with favor upon the citizenship and presence of William Albert Ayres. He has been numbered among other vigorous and thrifty population since 1884, the year in which he plowed his first furrow herein and rode his first race after a cow. James Ayres, of Bowie, and Robert E., another brother, together with William A., constituted the trio of determined young men of that year, with ambition for the eventual achievement of substantial results, and they constitute the same trio today who are in the actual enjoyment of the fruits of their early aspirations.
Since the year 1856 the Ayres of this branch have been citizens of Texas. That year William Ayres, father of our subject, brought his family from Alabama and established it in Smith county. The father was a native of Alabama, grew up on a plantation and pursued the vocation of a farmer himself throughout life. He married Nancy Patton, a daughter of John Patton, a Mississippi farmer. In Smith county the family belonged to the poor but honorable class of citizens, and were following their vocation without incident until the Civil war came up, when the father and oldest son were drawn into the conflict. They both joined the regular Texas contingent of the Confederate army and did their duty until the fratricidal contest came to an end. Just before he was to have returned to his family the father died, in 1865, and the responsibility of rearing and caring for a growing family fell to the lot of the mother.
By the marriage of William and Nancy Ayres there were children, viz: Elizabeth, deceased, who married Kelley Pierce and died in Cooke county, Texas; Mary, who married James Jones and died in the same county; James, a leading merchant of Bowie; William A. and Robert E., twin brothers; Hallig M., of Tishomingo, Indian Territory. About 1868, the family moved from Smith into Cooke county and there the mother guided the footsteps of her children until years of discretion and accountability were reached. When the sons came into Montague county and established themselves, the mother followed in time, and at the home of her son, William A., she passed away in June, 1896.
The country schools provided all the advantages for an education that William A. Ayres had in childhood, and in Cooke county he reached his majority and began his serious, independent career. The work of the family home was in common and the brothers left each other a helping hand at every opportunity and everything seemed to make progress in harmony toward the goal of each ambition. The brothers bought and paid out a home of one hundred and sixty acres in Cooke county and when they came to Montague county they had a few hundred dollars with which to begin the stock business as well as farming. For many years William A. and Robert E. Ayres were associated together in the stock business, made the venture pay and became widely and favorably known as cowmen. In the beginning William A. Ayres purchased a bottom farm on Denton creek and made his home upon it until 1893, when he improved a site near Salona, where he has since resided. He owns nearly a section of land, has given up the stock industry and is devoting himself to systematic and intelligent and successful agriculture.
Mr. Ayres was born in Itawamba county, Miss., June 28, 1853, and in Cooke county, October 8, 1853, and in Cooke county, October 8, 1874, he was first married, his wife being Mary, a daughter of Dr. Russell, a former Georgian, who came to Texas from Louisiana, where his daughter Mary was born. Mrs. Ayres died January, 1889, leaving children: William Raymond, who married Cora Ditto and has a son, William Donaldson; Pearl, wife of Ed Archer, of Bowie, with children, Emmet and Floyd; and Arthur, yet with the parental home. April 3, 1890, Mr. Ayres married Mrs. Rachel Walker, a daughter of Mr. Carroll, formerly from Tennessee. By her first husband Mrs. Rachel Ayres left a daughter, Dessimond, now the wife of Albert Archer, of Salona, with issue, Carl and Edward. The children of William A. and Rachel Ayres are: Marvin, Viven, Mary Lee and Otis. June 2, 1900, the wife and mother died and May 28, 1901, Mrs. Ayres took in marriage Mrs. Lou Clark, widow of Mr. Clark and a daughter of B. R. and Ellen (Fontner) McCarroll, formerly from Tishomingo county, Mississippi. Mrs. Ayres was born in Johnson county, Arkansas, January, 1862, and is the mother of a son, James C. Clark.
As the evening of life approaches Mr. Ayres finds himself in the possession of a just reward for years of honest toil. His family are coming into lives of activity and some of them have taken their stations in the world's affairs and are maintaining the family name and fame. He has had little interest in politics, but is a sincere supporter of the interests of the church. He is a steward in the Methodist church, is an Odd Fellow and a Democrat.

Charles Hamilton Adams was born in Long Beach, California on September 27, 1945 to Marjorie Ann Edwards Adams and Charles Knight Adams. As WWII came to a close, the first born "Charlie" and his parents returned to their hometown, Dallas . Charlie was a fifth generation Dallasite, descended from the Cochrans, Jenkins and Knights who came to Dallas in 1846, three years after Dallas founder John Neely Bryan settled on the banks of the Trinity River. The Knight farm later became the Oak Lawn Addition of Dallas . Charlie attended Walnut Hill Elementary School, Cary Jr. High, Thomas Jefferson High School and graduated from Texas Military Institute in San Antonio in 1963. He Graduated from TCU in 1967, where he was an officer in Phi Delta Theta, and drummer in the well known Throckmorton Street Rescue Mission Rock and Roll Band. He was Battalion Commander and Distinguished Military Graduate of the TCU Army ROTC, accepting a Regular Army Commision and serving our country well in the U.S. and Korea. He worked many years as General Manager of Custom Automotive. Charlie loved baseball. Accomplished at the plate due to his good eye and muscular 6'2" frame, and in the outfield due to his sure glove and accurate arm, he was an excellent player; however, he found his real avocation in life behind the plate as an umpire. He quickly rose though the "Little League" and junior high ranks until he became a 5A umpire. One of his proudest moments was when the local 5A coaches selected him as a preferred playoff umpire due to his skill and impartiality. He was well known to call the games closely and fairly. Charlie was charismatic. He was a raconteur of the highest order, a teller of tall tales who regaled people with stories both true and imagined. He captivated people with his positive energy and his love of life. He cared about people and they sensed it without being told. It was fun to be around him. He was totally non-judgmental. The glass was always half full. Charlie is survived by his wife Brenda and their children through marriage, Graham, Monty and Callie. Charlie is also survived by his sons, Charles Adams, Travis Adams, and Austin Adams, by his sisters, Nancy Adams, Marjie Osborne and Ginny McCanse by his brothers, Andrew Adams and his wife Cris, their daughters Sarah Adams and Rachel Adams, George Adams and his wife Debbie, their daughters Lauren Adams and Lindsey Adams, Bill Bedford and Henry Bedford. Charlie is also survived by his dear friend Sid Bradshaw. Hail and farewell, my great and true friend, we will miss you terribly. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 18th at Chinn's Chapel United Methodist Church 100 Chinn's Chapel Road, Copper Canyon, TX 75077 with Pastor Paul McGarvey officiating. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate a donation in Charlie's memory to Chinn's Chapel.

Mrs. Mattie Ditto Instantly Killed By T. & P. Train
Mrs. Mattie A. Ditto, 79, was instantly killed Friday evening about 5:30 when struck by a Texas and Pacific passenger train at the Center Street crossing.
Mrs. Ditto was on the way home from spending the day with friends on the North Side and apparently did not see the approaching train until it was almost upon her. A Moore ambulance carried her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Mrs. Ditto left home early in the morning to attend to some business in town, going to the business part of town to the home of Mrs. Henry McKee, a life time friend, where she spent the day. On the way home she stopped in for a short visit with Mrs. J. H. Purvis and spoke of being later than she intended and that she must hurry home for supper.
Her son, Harry Ditto who works in Ft. Worth got off a bus on the highway just about the time the accident occurred and got to the scene in time to accompany his mother’s body to the hospital.
Mrs. Ditto had lived in Arlington for the past 56 years and the news of her tragic death shocked the entire town. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon.

Friday August 20
Funeral Services For Mrs. Mattie Ditto Arlington Pioneer
Funeral services were conducted Sunday evening for Mrs. Mattie A. Ditto, 79, at the residence with Rev. Wm. H. Cole, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating. Pall bearers were Gordon Nichols, J. R. Wright. Donald Owens, Charles Bucher, Horace Cooper and J. H. Purvis.
Burial was in the Arlington Cemetery with the Hugh Moore Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors are three sons, John, Ernest and Harry Ditto all of Arlington and one brother, Luke Robinson, Lovington, New Mexico.
Mrs. Ditto was born in Cook County near Gainesville December 23, 1861. The family moved to Grand Prairie when Mrs. Ditto was a child and resided there until they moved to Arlington 56 years ago, where she lived until the time of her death. She married John W. Ditto of Arlington, a member of one of the first families to settle in Arlington. Mr. Ditto was one of the first business men of the town and was active in all progressive moves for the community until his death Sept. 22, 1921.
Mrs. Ditto was a charter member of the Methodist Church and a short time before her death wrote a history of the local church. According to this history, the church which Mrs. Ditto helped organize in 1877 had its start in the Watson Community and services were held there in the Presbyterian Church and later the same members moved the church to Arlington.
Mrs. Ditto helped raise the funds for the first organ for the church and was the first organist. She continued active in church work until a few years ago.
Mrs. Ditto was the mother of five children, three boys and two girls, the girls having passed on before their mother.
Mrs. Ditto made her home with her son, Harry and his wife and her greatest pleasure in her later years was visiting her old friends, and on the day she met her tragic death had spent the day with Mrs. John McKee and had also visited with Mrs. J. H. Purvis. She made friends easily and had the happy faculty of holding friendships after they were made.
Even strangers after meeting her and conversing with her, felt themselves drawn to her by her straightforward earnest manner, they knew there was no pretense or flattery in her life, but that what she was the first time they met her she would be the next.
In the passing of Mrs. Ditto Arlington loses one of its best loved pioneer women, a woman who had known viscisitudes and hardships of life, but through it all remained sweet and true to the ideals of a true Christian. She lived her religion and helped others to do the same by her example and unfaltering adherence to duty and loyalty.
Her memory will linger long with those who knew her best and the church she loved and helped to build will forever be a monument, sacred to the influence and sacrifice of a true Christian mother and friend. | Mattie A EARNEST

Mr. Jedediah Garrison departed this life in Franklin County, Georgia, March 3, 1830, in the 78th year of his age. He was born in the county of Cortwight, North Carolina, of English parents in 1752. In 1786, he embraced religion under the ministry of Mr. Partridge, and some time after he removed to South Carolina, where he became a class leader and exhorter, both of which offices he filled with much fidelity and usefulness. After some years he removed to Georgia, where he spent the remainder of his days in the faithful discharge of his duties to God and man. He wasted away slowly with a lingering disease, but his faith was made perfect. A little before he died, he praised God for all his mercies, and said the ministering spirits were waiting to convey him home. His death indeed was truly triumphant, affording a striking evidence to all who behold it of the efficacy and power of divine grace.

Husband of Sarah Elizabeth Garrison
T. S. Garrison was a native of Georgia. At the age of 31 he moved to Texas and settled in Shelby County, where he lived until his death. He was in business in Timpson most of the time "and did more for that town and that part of Shelby county than probably any other man."
Mr. Garrison assisted in the construction of the HE&WT railroad and also the line that connects with Longview. He twice ran for State Treasurer. He was a member of the Timpson Methodist Church and served as superintendent of the Sunday school for 20 years. In 1910 he was bank president.
His obituary also states that "Capt. Garrison was a staunch Democrat and a lifelong prohibitionist and never lost an opportunity to do his part in the abolition of the liquor traffic and it was a happy day for him when the nation went dry."
Mr. Garrison seemed in good health until shortly before his death, at age 83. His wife Sarah Elizabeth had died on November 18, 1918. Survivors included 2 daughters: Mrs. C. E. Sanford and Mrs. A. C. Vinson of Timpson; 1 son: John T. Garrison of Houston; 3 sisters: Mrs. Carter of Timpson, Mrs. Daniels of Cushing, and Mrs. Johnson of Timpson.

William Oscar Garrison was born March 15, 1852, in Rome, Ga. He died in the home of his son in Carrizozo, May 5, 1933. Mr. Garrison was married to Miss Neal Beall Braswell, April 21, 1886, in Dallas. To this union 6 children were born, three of whom survive their father, namely: Verno[sic] Alfred, Dallas, Carl Oscar, Carrizozo, Mrs. H. C. Enas, Fort Worth.
Mr. and Mrs. Garrison moved from Texas to Arizona in 1915 and came here in 1932.
Mr. Garrison was a devout member of the Methodist Church having joined in Texas many years ago. He was also a member of the Masonic order. Mr. Garrison was a quiet, unassuming man of culture, refinement and sterling qualities and was deeply interested in the well-being of his fellow man. A devoted husband and father and kindly friend and neighbor has left us. After brief funeral services conducted by Rev. Lawson and under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, May 6, the remains were taken to Texas for interment.
Editor's Note--To the writer, Mr. Garrison was more than a friend, in whom one could place the utmost of implicit confidence. In his daily walks of life, a gentleman in every sense of the word; a Christian in his acts of kindness and a Mason, who balanced with the principles for which the order stands, will be sadly missed from its communications, in which he always held an honored seat. To his family, the sympathy of our community is tendered. (Obituary of William Oscar Garrison, date and newspaper unknown.) | William Oscar GARRISON

HANSBROUGH, Livingston Chancellor "Pete," died Monday, September 22, 2008 in Henrico County, Virginia.
He was 95. He was born in 1913 in Salem, Virginia, the son of the late Livingston Chancellor Hansbrough Sr. and the late Louise Logan Hansbrough Apperson.
He attended Roanoke College, where he was a Sigma Chi. As a young man, he worked for several New Deal programs, surveying for the Tennessee Valley Authority and working with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked for many years as a general manager and operations manager for Carolina Coach Company busline in Richmond, Norfolk and Raleigh, N.C.
He was a member of the Rotary Club. He was the widower of Alfreda Shields Hansbrough, who died in 1999.
Slightly built, with boyish looks and a headful of curls, Pete had a playful, teasing manner and loved a good argument. He delighted in his children and grandchildren, to whom he was known as Daddy Pete.
He was passionate about fishing, gardening, fixing things and watching Duke athletics. Pete was never so happy as when engaged in a curmudgeonly crusade. He fought what he considered burdensome new sidewalks and road extensions in Raleigh, N.C., church bells he thought were too loud in Henrico County, Va., and had close to a hundred squirrel pelts from a decades-long defense of his birdfeeder.
He had a sharp, wide-ranging memory and a lively interest in current events. He could speak vividly one moment about his Civil War-veteran grandfather and the Virginia of his youth, then shift to a discussion of an article on world affairs he had read in one of three newspapers to which he subscribed.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Phillip Logan, Woodson Hansbrough and Harvey Apperson Jr.; and two sisters, Louise Hansbrough Auburn and Marion Hansbrough Hait. He is survived by a brother, Charles Apperson of Bowling Green; two daughters, Cynthia Hansbrough Kight and Carrington Hansbrough OBrion, both of Richmond; two sons-in-law, John Randolph Kight Jr. and John H. OBrion Jr.; four grandsons, J. Randolph Kight III, Christopher OBrion, and Cameron O'Brion, all of Richmond, and David Kight of Virginia Beach; three granddaughters-in-law, Lisa Kight, Catherine OBrion and Emily O'Brion, all of Richmond; and five great-grandchildren, Alex, Gregory and Jacob Kight, and Carrington and Grace OBrion, all of Richmond.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 27, at Woody's Parham Chapel at 1771 Parham Rd., in Richmond. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
Donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, 490 Westfield Rd., Charlottesville Va. 22901. Notes to the family may be left at www.mem.com.

12/27/2011- According to the book, "The Irwins, Doaks, Logans and McCampbells of Virginia and Kentucky" by Margaret Logan Morris, pub. 1916, p. 48, both James and Hannah Logan "are buried at New Monmouth church cemetery, Rockbridge County, Va."
However, it has been brought to my attention by another James Logan descendant that New Monmouth church was not yet built when James died, but that it's possible he was buried at Old Monmouth church cemetery.
I would love to hear from anyone who has proof of James' and Hannah's burial place. | James LOGAN

Died at his residence in Benton County, Ala. on 2nd Feby. at 3 o'clock A.M., Samuel Morgan, at the advanced age of 77 years, 9 months and 7 days after a short but severe attack of Pneumonia. He was born in New Jersey, and while young his Father moved to Georgia. He lived there until 1834, when he moved to this State. He enjoyed good health and was uncommonly stout and active until stricken down by the disease that ended his earthly race. He was a member of the Methodist Church, to which he was strongly attached. He was correct in all his dealings with his neighbors and orderly in his deportment. He was a model of punctuality, industry and honesty. He was liberal to his children, dividing amongst them his increase, and reserving to himself only what he considered necessary to render him comfortable in his declining days. He lived to see his children's children's children. During his last sickness he retained his reason, and knew all his children and friends that visited him. He murmured not at his affliction. When interrogated in reference to death, he always expressed a willingness to die and also an assurance that he was prepared for Heaven. He has left a large posterity who mourn over his departure, but they sorrow not as those who have no hope. The testimony is clear and indubitable. Their loss is his everlasting gain.

The sad news flashed over the wires last night that Mrs. L. C. Spencer, loved by all in Nacogdoches as "Miss Vinnie" died in New Orleans at ten o'clock last night. For days her friends had been receiving telegrams that she was steadily growing worse in spite of all that skill and science could accomplish and hope of her recovery had been abandoned yesterday. Mrs. Spencer was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hardeman Perkins of our city, and this entire community and the husband are left to mourn one of the sweetest characters that ever passed from earth. Her sisters, Mrs. B. F. Thompson and Miss Bessie Perkins, of Nacogdoches, were with her when she passed away. The other members of the family were unable to leave their mother, for whom the effect of the terrible shock is greatly feared. The funeral party will arrive tonight from New Orleans and the funeral will take place from the residence of Mr. H. Perkins tomorrow afternoon at four o'clock. The lips of sympathy are dumb before the grief of those bound by the close ties of love to her who is gone, but the sympathy that grieves with them for loss of the spotless spirit that has passed to a better world is theirs from every heart.

As Della grew into a young lady she learned the millinery trade and was so employed in the village of Gladbrook. When the family moved to Brooklyn she became similarly employed in the nearby town of Malcom. Just as Tom was attracted to Nancy as a young man back in Norton, so was Billy Karr, the young Brooklyn dry goods merchant, attracted to Della, their blooming young daughter. They were married in Brooklyn on December 27, 1894. They enjoyed a long and happy life together and celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with the help of their daughter Katherine. And just as they were together all through life they died near the same time; he on January 17, 1947 and she the following June 4. Both were 79 at time of death.

OakWood Cemetery at Honey Grove Burial Record Book
This record is a copy of the original Burial book by Calvin Trout. His record covers 1891-1939 and records the burials in this huge cemetery. The Dates are Interment Dates & Due to the dating , I can tell he was not the only Cemetery worker as there are large gaps in the dates. This transcription had some dates incomplete and stopped at end of 1919 and then picked up a list of burials of 1937 with no explanation or dates. Some of these people may not have stones or be readable any longer.
